Techniques to Reduce PSD Size

This tutorial is all about simple ways in which you can reduce the PSD size in order to solve the storage issues. These ways are quite easy and will save your storage space which is a matter of concern for everyone!

  1. Adjustment layer for Blending Modes

Many of us change the blend mode by initially duplicating the layers. This results in an increase in the size of the PSD file to a great extent. So, instead of creating a new background layer, one can create a new adjustment layer. Then, change the Blend Mode. This will keep the size of the image as it was initially.

Techniques to Reduce PSD Size

  1. First Hide Layers, then Save

This technique reduces the size of the image to about 10-20% of the previous size.

This is after hiding all the layers and later saving the file. The file size is reduced significantly.

  1. Filling white color in a newly created layer

This technique reduces the size to about 20-30%. Create a new layer using the shortcut Ctrl+Shift+N. Fill the white color in the top layer.reduce-psd-size-10

The size reduces to almost 20% of the previous size.

  1. Turn off the ‘Maximum Photoshop

When this feature is turned on, a flattened version of the layers is stored in the memory which increases the storage space. To turn it off, go to the ‘Edit’ menu and click on ‘Preferences’. Then, click on ‘File Handling’. In the window, make this option as ‘Never’.

  1. Compress the PSD file

This is one of the most popular and best ways to reduce storage space. Store the PSD file in a compact form (.rar). This can be done with the help of WinRAR or any other compressing software.

If you want to reduce the PSD size to about 50%, then use all the above the techniques simultaneously and see how drastically the size reduces! Some small things to keep in mind so that your PSD size is reduced are-

  • Turn on the ‘Delete Cropped Pixels’ feature while cropping an image.
  • Remove the unused or adjustment layers.
  • Delete the ‘White background Layer’, if it is making no good to your image.
  • Always keep the resolution during designing as 72 pixels per inch. Also, keep the mode as CMYK.
  • With Vectors Layers, always work in small dimensions.

So, follow these small things and reduce your PSD size!
